Choose Your Favorite Manzanillo Beach

The beaches of Manzanillo are an essential part of life for the local population as well as for visitors. Even restaurants and most shops close on Sundays, and all involved head for their favorite Manzanillo beach. Playa Azul stretches along Manzanillo Bay, and, except where hotels have staked their claim, are considered to have quite an undertow for most swimmers. Playa Audencia is a lovely cove beach on the Santiago Peninsula, favored for snorkeling. Playa Miramar along Santiago Bay has something for everyone, windsurfers and sun-worshippers alike. A popular and safe spot is across from Club Maeva. For an unusual black sand Manzanillo beach, Playa Cuyutlan is just south of town.

Club de Yates

Club de Yates (Yacht Club Beach) is really called Playa Perla (Pearl Beach) on most local maps. Located on the left side of Playa La Audiencia, it offers a tiny bit of sand under a shade tree, and excellent snorkeling and diving. This is a very popular place for night dives because of the giant sleeping parrot fish in the shallows on the left side of the bay.

Pena Blanca

Pena Blanca

Another unpopulated Manzanillo beach is Peña Blanca, km 24, where Rancho Peña Blanca offers ATV adventures and Jeep tours to this once quiet haven. Fortunately they don't have much business as yet, so the long expanse of beach is still unpopulated. During various times of the year, the beach is closed so that the endangered turtles may lay their eggs. During that time the beach is protected by human volunteers and Mexican Navy personnel, who guard against poachers. The area got its name from the great rock pinnacle, visible from this Manzanillo beach, called Peña Blanca, or "White Rock," after the bird droppings that give it its color.

Playa L Recif

Playa L Recif

Playa L Recif

A small, pebble-strewn beach where the wave action can be spectacular. When calm, the diving and snorkeling is great because of the huge coral reef just a few yards off shore. Come just for the view, both above and below the water. A word of caution: at this site the ocean conditions can change rather quickly, so if you plan to be in the water, be aware at all times. The photo-taking opportunities from the top of the hill will make your trip enjoyable, no matter what.
